Books and Things

I don't read very much YA contemporary books. I keep seeing books in this genre that require much drama and not much substance. Now, I know that isn't all that is there in this particular genre, but I've seen enough of it to make me not crave these types of books. However, some of the aussie bloggers I've been reading gave such glowing reviews of this book I knew I had to read it and jumped at the chance when I learned it was going to be published in the US. I must tell you now, I was not disappointed.

The story lines of Shadow, Lucy, Poet, Jazz, Dylan and Daisy captured me. It's mostly about kids bumbling around making mistakes and growing from those mistakes. Learning who they are and what they really want. Things that adults rarely do within a lifetime. Now even though this held my interest it was not because of what was going on and the small adventures they have during one fateful night. What held me at rapt attention was the writing within this book. The writing was visual. It was lyrical. It was magic. Yes, all high praise, but you rarely come across a book that is written this way. When I do, I take notice.

I give this book 5 stars. It is one I know I'll be reading again. I personally loved the visual language Cath Crowley used to tell this story. If you are looking for a contemporary YA, do try this one. You might be surprised of the writing within.
